Hierarchy & Grid: Top 5 Albums of 2021

In this assignment, our class was given the challenge of using given information and formatting it using a hierarchy and a five-column grid structure. Now there are many ways in which a designer can tackle this grid, but personally, I found a few methods effective.

First, my main plan of attack was to allow the respective albums and their information to breathe while also following an orderly pattern. In order to effectively navigate the compositions as a reader, the columns had to be numbered and organized.

Second, another method I found effective was adequate font selection and dispersion. Mrs. Eaves was the required font our class had to use, so that meant getting creative with the different styles the Mrs. Eaves font family has to offer. Also, to create even more contrast and to differ from just simply changing the sizes of the fonts, I decided to use the color difference as a design tool to strengthen the hierarchy.

Lastly, I used shapes and lines to enhance the composition and the hierarchy. For example, in Figure 2 I desired a composition in which more shapes and lines were used. In that composition, I allowed contrast to become the focus, while also using rectangles and bold lines to guide the viewer's eye.

Typographic Information for the following compositions:
